I don't understand ISO week

Please explain why Sunday jan 1, 2023 prints as 52 using %V -- why is that different to week 1?

week 1 starts with Jan 1 for every year...

Doesn't make sense

Nope.

Every week starts on a Monday.

Every week only has one number.

So the question is what to do with weeks that contain days belonging to two different years.

The ISO 8601 says that week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year.

As a Swede I feel this is all very normal because here all calendars have weeks numbered this way and we often use week numbers to refer to things happening certain weeks.
