You know how (In Windows at least) one can right click on a file and say open file with... and then whichever program is selected the name of the file is passed as a parameter to the program that is being opened and tah dah... the file is opened with whatever... ya how do I do that... and sorry for the potentially confusing explanation...
It's called file association. Both software/installers and the user can manage them. File association is based entirely on file extension.
