// Well don't worry, I can tolerate people who can't tolerate my slashes, because I'm tolerant, lol. I suppose if ignoring a person over slashes is more important than transacting information, well I can't say I agree but it was a pleasure doing business with you. Anyway, you better be prepared to see a lot of slashes because I'm probably going to be here for a looong time.... probably death or the apocalypse.. back to C++! ^.^
// EDIT: Actually I just realized, this is a grand day! I didn't know you could collapse posts, awesome! I would be pleased if more people followed helios' path, because, and no offense, but anyone lacking that sort of willpower to overcome an annoyance is someone I don't want to receive information from or be affiliated with, so this is a great filtration process :D.
// Also, I find double-carriage-return line separation harder to read over indentation, and if I don't do it it means we're still talking in the same paragraph...my paragraphs are just longer and require more than that. The //'s indicate a sort of sub-section of the paragraph(and the start of it), and a double-carriage-return is an actual new paragraph. It's also a handy signature, easily pointing out which posts are mine, and the different patterns they create help me determine quickly almost exactly where I'm at in these forums. It helps when your computer is so slow that scrolling up/down is a lag-tastic adventure, and so it's harder to miss my posts when the screen is going only a few frames per second and everything is distorted.
// So, again I know it may be selfish, but my efficiency is more important than your mundane "annoyance" :P in my opinion. Basically, if what I say is hard to read, it's probably me and not the slashes, otherwise, it kind of boggles my mind that my slashes have just created this barrier that, a human being of all people, can't handle. Welcome to the modern world I guess! I love you, as usual.
So, again I know it may be selfish, but my efficiency is more important than your mundane "annoyance" :P in my opinion.
Have you ever heard the expression "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."?
The thing is, you write to appease to other people. If you don't cater to your audience, people won't want to read what you're typing, so you end up just talking to yourself.
If you're happy that people are ignoring your posts, and you want more people to ignore your posts... then why are you even posting? If everyone's ignoring you, what's the point?
I kind of agree with Albatross, the double slashes are silly.
Also, I find double-carriage-return line separation harder to read over indentation, and if I don't do it it means we're still talking in the same paragraph..
So why are YOU using double slashes then, you aren't going to be reading your own posts more than the rest of us all together do. .. (are you? : /)
@Nohbody. Glad to see you standing your ground.
People who have a problem with something as small as the // issue probably also refuse to read or respond to posts if the use of English is less than perfect or the code contains comments in other languages etc, etc...
I think it's primarily arrogance which prevents tolerance.
Being a hater is easy. The world is full of them (for proof, read the comments following almost any yahoo news story ). Try not being one. The reward is more (personal) peace.
I am not a hater, I am just curious and give advice a lot. I'm curious why he makes it harder for others to read his posts and advice him to not do so. If that's your description of a hater, call me a hater. This topic if getting.. off-topic, though.
@fun2code: Thanks, I agree with your name by the way :P.
@Kyon: Yep, I read my own posts. I have the ability to educate myself with my own words just by re-reading it in another perspective, mood, age etc. We all have that ability, I'm using it. Also, I don't mean to assume or think anyone is on my side, but I thought Albatross' meaning was that everyone making this a big deal is silly(that may include me, but I'm a defender, unless you consider my slashes to be the provoker, then you're getting too philosophical with it even for me).
@Disch: I don't recall 'simply' saying I want more people to ignore me, I think you'll find I meant I hope everyone who thinks this is such a problem should make a solution now(like I said, filtration process). Do you think 'everyone' is going to ignore me? No, I don't have that much doubt in humanity that all programmers on this website can't stand reading double slashes. One should avoid exaggeration when making a statement in this situation.
// I literally am serious though, when I say that I don't even want to exchange information with someone who can't get over the slashes, it's not an insult(nothing I say is meant to be btw, insults are as useful as anger). I don't want them to support me, and I don't want to support them; just as I wouldn't want religious fanatics to be a part of space programs, I don't want to absorb opinions and bias from someone who I can't agree with on something as ridiculous as this. If you think "readability" is high on the priority list of informal forum discussion(above other priorities such as "teaching" and "helping"), then I can't exactly trust that person in their other priorities.
// At one point with my time in this community, I may be able to help fellow programmers with advanced problems. I will admit, I don't want to help the people who are so highly irritated with these slashes, I want the people who have more reasonable minds to prosper, and I'd prefer not to mix the reasonable with the unreasonable.
// Besides, the people that I see as unreasonable see me as unreasonable in my way of typing(and you're right, you can't reason with me on this one, because the pro's outweigh the cons), and since these people don't want to help me, let alone read my posts, it's a win-win situation.
// Again, there is no reason to find this moment negative, this really is a great thing that has happened. ^.^
I watched Pirates of Silicon Valley earlier this week, weirdly. Bit pro-Jobs/anti-MS - but that seems to be a common theme in the computing world for some reason.
Yeah I've seen that and "The social network" and think all of them don't show the CEOs in a very good way. Their mostly egomanic, solitudial Nerds. Giving up friendship (and ex wives) for their "dream". It's mostly remarkable that Jobs named the computer Lisa after his child he didn't care nor paid for. Or that Zuckerberg steals ideas and betrays friends in favour of his "dream". Which was to bring "the social experience of college" to the masses. Which he did. What an social/anti-social irony ;)
It's "couldn't care less"! When you say "I could care less", that means you care some amount, whereas "I couldn't care less" means that you don't care at all. Why do people get this wrong so often?
