Externally recording a VGA signal (to any media)

This is for computer recordings, i.e. recording lets play videos and such.
Screen recorders for computers are the first choice however on even moderate spec hardware they are insanely processor hungry. My second idea is to capture the actual signal going into the monitor and either store the raw data to a drive, or encode it on the fly.

There are some "capture cards" that do this but most of them capture to USB (from RCA), and I don't have a second computer to process the data so I end up with the processing problem again. Also there's the fact that most of these kits are about £20-30 for something that won't help me out much.

So I was wondering if anyone knows where to buy, or how to make, and inline (or just straight into) VGA capture device? The main idea being that I can plug my hard/flash drive in and just let it record as I do my stuff separately and I stick the recording on my PC later.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I can also capture from Composite Video / Scart leads (through a little magic box)
