Computer security

Hey so I've been really curious about this subject. Computer and network security. Like security on a single computer, over a LAN, over the internet. Through routers, etc. Basically, I'm not sure where to start learning about any of this, and how to go about doing some basic programs to work with encryption and other security measures. Any and all knowledge and direction you guys/gals have to offer on this subject would be greatly appreciated!
