Editing a text file

Hey everyone.. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the process or show me some source code to look at on opening a text file from the desktop, entering a line of text, and then saving and closing the file. Im not sure how complex it would be but any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS - im using Ubuntu and scripting using a text editor and compiling and executing the code in Terminal using g++.
