There are also on-line tutorials, starting from the "I don't know how to program" basics.

The tutorial here at CPlusPlus is a bit outdated, very little C++14 and no C++17 or later, though more up-to-date versus your book:

The siren was for Cook who is now doing a 15 year stretch for trafficking speed and explosives.

His career in computing is in ruins. His PC was seized as a proceed of crime.

Still, the map idea and your progression on that was a good idea. Who knows though what C++36 will have.
